Sony spent thirty years insisting video games were beneath it. Then Nintendo broke a handshake in the worst possible way, and one engineer’s stubborn side project turned into the PlayStation.

Before Sega meant Sonic, it meant coin-operated jukeboxes for American troops in occupied Tokyo, a periscope-shaped submarine game that invented the arcade quarter, and a home computer stripped down and rushed to market in months to keep pace with a rival called Nintendo. This is the story of how a jukebox importer became a console maker, told through the people who lived it.

When the American video game market collapsed in 1983, industry giants walked away and retailers swore off consoles entirely. Yet in Kyoto, Nintendo took the opposite bet. Built under ruthless budget limits by an engineer working off a late-night phone call from Hiroshi Yamauchi, the Family Computer didn’t just survive the fallout—it established the blueprint for modern console economics and turned video games into a global cultural fixture.

Long before the NES and Switch, Nintendo spent a decade fighting for floor space in Japanese game centres and American bars. From film-based horse-racing cabinets to the warehouse failure that birthed Donkey Kong, discover how Nintendo’s trial by fire in the coin-op market laid the engineering and legal groundwork for its console empire.

Nintendo has spent over forty years deliberately sidestepping the hardware specs race by relying on Gunpei Yokoi’s doctrine of “lateral thinking with withered technology”. Rather than pursuing bleeding-edge processors, the company continuously repurposed mature, cost-effective components—from the Famicom’s modified 6502 core to the Nintendo Switch’s mobile Tegra X1 chip—proving that constraint and creative software can outlast raw power.

Long before Mario and the NES, Nintendo spent decades handcrafting hanafuda cards for illicit gambling parlors, surviving near-bankruptcy, and pivoting through failed ventures. Guided by Gunpei Yokoi’s philosophy of “lateral thinking with withered technology,” a traditional Kyoto workshop improvised its way into a global video game dynasty.
